ALAANZ 2020 / 2021 National Conference Update

The ALAANZ 2020-2021 Conference Organising Committee and ALAANZ National Council have continued to closely monitor all Australian Government and World Health Organisation updates and advices in respect of the COVID-19 situation, and the impact this continues to have both here in Australia and Internationally.

After considering the information available shortly after the pandemic was declared, the Committee and the Council made the decision to defer the 2020 Conference from 6 – 8 May 2020 to 21 to 23 October 2020. This decision was made based on the information available at the time, and in the hope the conference could still be held in 2020.

The Committee and the Council have now decided to defer the conference until 5 May 2021 to 7 May 2021.

As time has progressed the situation here in Australia and overseas has reinforced that this situation is without precedent, and that it is difficult for government and health officials to estimate what an ‘end point’ to the pandemic might look like, and when that might be achieved. Some current predictions are that international travel to Australia may not be widely possible until late 2021, and that self-isolation periods for arriving travelers are also likely to be in effect for some time.

Our International speakers and delegates must of course also factor in their own country’s measures into their plans.

Whilst we have seen some travel restrictions ease domestically, we have also seen that in a very short space of time the situation can change in one location quickly, and this can spread to other areas just as fast. Our thoughts are with our friends, family and colleagues in Victoria and New South Wales at this time.
The Committee and the Council also acknowledge that many of its members and those in the aviation industry are doing it tough at the moment, and that there is an increased focus on ensuring spending is only on business critical matters, to ensure they weather this storm and emerge from it in a strong position.

In view of this, the Committee and the Council have considered the most appropriate course of action is to defer the 2020 conference to 2021. This is not a decision that has been reached lightly. Whilst the Committee and the Council appreciate this will be the first time in the Association’s 39 year history that a conference has not been held, it is the right decision.

The conference will still be held in Brisbane at The Emporium Hotel South Bank, from 5 May 2021 to 7 May 2021. The weather will be perfect, and Queensland will be continuing to shine in its new capacity as the sport, cultural and lifestyle hub of Australia.

Our sponsors, speakers, delegates, conference coordinators and suppliers are our top priority and we strongly believe this is the right decision given the international nature of our conference and the evolving public health risks, travel concerns and limitations and other circumstances.
The Council and Committee’s commitment to you its members remain 100% focused on delivering a world class aviation law conference in May 2021.
